About Us
On 25th November 2023 a meeting was held by a group of 24 men and women concerned that veterans, living within the Great Southern, were not receiving the support they needed. It was seen that there was no single point of contact for veterans leaving the forces, or those already living here. Concerns were held that services available were not widely known or were lacking.
The model for Veterans Assist was developed with this in mind, goals developed to collect data on support services, and to help veterans integrate into communities through social inclusion activities. Veterans Assist, through the Phoenix Social Club, also holds activities that assist other Not-for-Profits that support veterans at all stages of their lives.
At the November meeting, it was agreed a Notfor-Profit organisation, manned by volunteers, was needed and on 28th February 2024, Veterans Assist Great Southern Inc. became incorporated. On 1st May 2024 it was formally recognised by the Department of Veterans Affairs as an Ex-Service Organisation (ESO).
Who are Veterans Assist?
Veterans Assist Great Southern are a Not-for-Profit organisation, manned by volunteers who:
Provide a point of contact to support veterans seeking welfare, well-being, health or mental health assistance as a result of their military service.
Work with groups or agencies who assist veterans struggling with homelessness, isolation or substance abuse.
Assist families to enable them to better support and understand their veterans’ needs.
Phoenix Social Club
The Phoenix Social Club was formed to provide a forum for social inclusion of like-minded people associated with Veterans Assist.
Phoenix Social Club members are Associate Members of Veterans Assist and help form the backbone of volunteers in our organisation supporting fundraisers and provide the ‘workforce’ when veterans, their families and the wider community need assistance.
Veterans Assist and Phoenix Club members have a member only Facebook group where all our events and activities are coordinated. They host dinners, fun activities and meet regularly for evening catchups and have a weekly coffee morning.
Veterans Assist members also belong to the Phoenix Social Club!
